Panorama: A Comprehensive Tool for Digital Accessibility and Remediation

Panorama for Digital Accessibility

Panorama is an accessibility checking tool embedded in Canvas and available as a standalone Panorama platform, which includes an automated accessibility checker that can review common file formats such as Microsoft Word, PDF files, or images for compliance with accessibility standards. Panorama provides a report to instructors with issues to be addressed, directions for how to fix them, and can generate alternative formats for you or your students.

Digital Accessibility Extended Toolkit: Panorama Add-ons

We have recently added three specialized tools to help you remediate (fix) your content. These tools are designed to handle the "heavy lifting" in some cases for you.

1. Panorama Microsoft Office Add-In

  • What it is: A tool that lives directly inside Word and PowerPoint.

  • Best for: Daily document creation. It flags issues as you write so you can fix them before you even upload them to Canvas.

  • Installation Guide: The video below demonstrates the installation steps.

The Panorama Add-In is currently restricted to personal devices due to our Microsoft license. We expect to support Le Moyne-issued devices once we upgrade to the 2024 version in Sumeer 2026.

2. AutoPilot AI (Credit-Based Resource)

  • What it is: An AI-powered assistant that suggests and applies accessibility fixes with a single click.

  • Usage Tip: Because this tool uses limited credits, please save it for complex documents with multiple errors. For a simple 1-item fix, we recommend using the standard Panorama editor.

  • Access: Found within the Panorama Accessibility Report of documents both in Canvas and on the Panorama platform.

When to Use AutoPilot

Think of AutoPilot as a precision tool for individual files rather than a "bulk fix" for your entire course. Because each file fixed with AutoPilot uses a shared campus credit (about $1.17 each), we recommend saving this power for your Red or Yellow icon documents that need the most help. The best part? Once you fix a specific file, it stays fixed! When you copy your course materials to a new semester or a different section, that accessible version travels with you automatically. You’ll never need to spend a second credit on the same document twice.

When Not to Use AutoPilot

Because AutoPilot is a limited resource, it should only be used when appropriate. It is recommended to refrain from using AutoPilot in the following examples:

  • When working with previously remediated files. AutoPilot will not find or resolve additional issues on a “second pass.”

  • When working on documents that already have high accessibility scores (green icon), AutoPilot is not recommended.

3. Structural Remediation (Credit-Based Resource)

  • What it is: A specialized tool for "broken" or scanned PDFs that lack a proper reading order. It essentially rebuilds the document's skeleton.

  • Usage Tip: This is a high-resource tool. Please save it for long or difficult PDFs where manual fixing would be too time-consuming.
