Converting iPhone Images from HEIC to Viewable Formats in Canvas

In Canvas, there may be assignments or questions that require a photo submission. If the photo is taken with an iPhone, the default format is an HEIC file type. This file type is not easily accessible through Canvas. The following steps are ways a photo that defaults as HEIC formatted can be converted for a Canvas submission.

How to Check if a File Is HEIC

If your iPhone has iOS 15 installed, it's possible to see if a file is a HEIC file or not. Here's how to check.

  1. Open Photos and find the photo you wish to check.

  2. Swipe up or tap i.

  3. Check the picture format next to the model name of your iPhone. If it says HEIF, it is a HEIC file.
