titleHow to publish a video in Kaltura My Media to a particular Canvas course?

Currently there is a known issue with publishing a video to a course or multiple courses in canvas from My Media. The workaround for this issue to publish your videos in Canvas courses is below.

To publish a video to a particular course after it is uploaded to My Media,

  1. Go to the Media Gallery of the course you want to publish the video in.

  4. Your videos in My Media will be listed here. Click on the check box next to the video(s) you want to publish to the course. A blue check mark will appear next to the video.

titleCan Kaltura Capture work with Keynote like it works with PPT slides (Mac users)?

Kaltura Capture only ingests MS PowerPoint slides. It does not support any other presentation applications. There is a known issue Kaltura reps are working to resolve when a user is presenting PowerPoint on MacOS and chapters are not automatically created. The feature should work on Window OS.

titleMemory issue when recording videos using Kaltura Capture on Macs.

We found an issue with Mac when using Kaltura Capture. The error is when you try to record your lectures you get a warning that says there is less memory and the videos are not completely getting recorded. This is only happening with Mac computers.

This is a known issue with Mac computers. We have contacted Kaltura support with the issue and their recommendations are below:

  1. The processor on your computer should be a minimum of Intel i5 or AMD A10 with 4 cores for Kaltura Capture to work with both Camera and Screen turned on. To find the number of cores running inside your Mac, simply click on the Apple logo on the upper left corner of the screen. Once you do, you will see the option ‘About This Mac'. Please check the number of cores your computer has under the 'Total Number of Cores.

  2. If your computer has 4 or more cores then you can try force quitting other application on your computer by following the steps mentioned here to free up space on your computer’s processor. After quitting all the applications, try relaunching Kaltura again. You can also watch this video that explains how to quit other applications from running in the background.

  3. If your computer still shows memory errors, please consider clicking on “Delete all uploaded files” button on the Kaltura Capture application to free up space on your computer. All files with Re-Upload next to the video are already uploaded to My Media in your Canvas course, deleting these files from your local computer will not occupy space on your computer.

  4. If your computer does not have 4 cores then the last option is changing the resolution of the video. To change the resolution, you can go to settings within Kaltura Capture application by clicking on the gear symbol on the left navigation menu, change the camera quality and screen quality to the lowest possible number and save the settings. If you are unsure where to look for the gear icon, click on Manage after launching Kaltura Capture located under the Kaltura Capture logo on the right most corner of Kaltura Capture recorder.

Instructions to upload a video directly from the text editor both for you and your students are as follows:

  • Click on the "V" on the bottom row of the text editor menu, there will be a dropdown menu with 4 options one of the options is Embed Kaltura Media. Click on the "Embed Kaltura Media" button.

  • From the Embed Kaltura Media window, select an existing video you wish to upload and click on the "Embed" button.

Please note that if students are recording a video of themselves and the slides, they need to have access to My Media to be able to access Kaltura Capture and thus be able to record their presentation.

If your students were recording a video of themselves and no presentation slides, then they can use Express Capture to record themselves easily rather than using Kaltura Capture. The steps are below:

titleCan I have my students submit a Kaltura video in a Discussion Assignment? In other words, where should students submit any media required from them? Eg, I am planning on asking students to do an intro video in advance of our class starting.

You can create a discussion assignment to achieve this goal.

Steps to create a discussion assignment are below:

  • In the Canvas course, click the Discussions link.

    • Click the + Discussion button to add a new discussion.

    • The Create new discussion page is displayed. In the Discussion Name text box, type the name of your discussion assignment.

    • Type the discussion instructions in the main text box. For example, the length of the video, questions you want them to cover in their introduction video, and instructions on how they can insert their videos etc.

    • Select the Graded checkbox to make this discussion into a graded discussion.

    • In the Points text box, type the highest grade students can receive.

    • If your assignments are categorized into groups, then, in the Assignment Group drop-down list, select the group for the assignment (optional).

    • Set the assignment due date.

    • Press Save and Publish.

    • Your video discussion will now be displayed in the Discussions page and assignments page for students to access. Based on your course design you can insert this discussion in modules and pages also.

Instructions to record a video directly from the discussion both for you and your students are as follows:

You can copy and paste these instructions in your discussion board to help your students on ho wto upload their video.

  • Students can use Express Capture to record themselves easily rather than using Kaltura Capture which allows them to record slides as well. The steps are below:

    • Click on the "V" on the bottom row of the text editor menu, there will be a dropdown menu with 4 options one of the options is Embed Kaltura Media. Click on the "Embed Kaltura Media" button.

  • From the Embed Kaltura Media window, you can click on +Add New button and select Express Capture from the drop down menu to record.

  • Once you finish recording their video, you will be given an option to preview the video. If you wish to re-record, you can click on the "Record Again" button. If you wish to keep the video, you need to click on the "Use This" button to upload the video. You will be asked to give the video a title, description and tags. One you enter the information for the video to be embedded into the discussion board, you need to click on the Save and Embed button.

    • Once the video is in the text editor and you enter your text, you need to click on the "Post Reply" button to post your submission to the discussion board in Canvas.

NOTE: We have received a response back from Kaltura support that Express Capture is not supported on iPhone and iPad browsers. I have two workarounds for you.

Workaround 1:

  1. Use your phone's camera to record the intro video.

  2. Go to the discussion board in your course and click on the Reply button.

  3. Click on the "V" on the bottom row of the text editor menu, there will be a dropdown menu with 4 options one of the options is Embed Kaltura Media. Click on the "Embed Kaltura Media.

  4. From the Embed Kaltura Media window, you can click on +Add New button and select Media Upload from the drop down menu

  5. You will be taken to a disclaimer page, once you agree to the terms by clicking on the checkbox, you will be taken to a page which has a button called "Choose a file to Upload."

  6. Click on the button and you will be able to upload the video you have already recorded on your iPad. After you upload, you will be asked to give the video title, description etc. Once you enter all the details, you need to click on the "Save and Embed" which is located on the page. Depending on the screen size, you may have to scroll around to find the button.

  7. After the video is added to the discussion board, click on the Post Reply button to post your response.

Workaround 2:

  1. Go to the discussion board in your course and click on the Reply button.

  2. Click on the video icon button on the bottom row of the text editor menu.

  3. You will get a screen that has two tabs called "Record Media" and "Upload Media." Record Media tab may or may not work because it uses Flash software. Most devices nowadays do not support Flash. So avoid using the Record Media tab.

  4. Click on the "Upload Media" tab. You will see two buttons called "Select Audio File" and "Select Video File."

  5. Since you are required to upload a video, click on the "Select Video File" button.

  6. You will have two options at this point, you can either record the video directly from this step by clicking on the "Take Photo or Video" button which will open your camera and allow you to record and upload the video. If you already have the video recorded on your iPad Photo Album, you can choose "Photo Library"from the options available, which opens your Photo Album on your device. Select the video you would like to upload and once the video is done processing it will be uploaded to the discussion post automatically. While the video is uploading, you can give it a title.

  7. Once you are back on Canvas discussion board page, click on the "Post Reply" button to submit your response.

These are the two workarounds that I have tested on mobile devices. I do not have an iPad so I do not know if workaround 1 works on an iPad, I say that because I tested it with an iPhone and it did not work because of the smaller screen size of an iPhone. If workaround 1 fails, you can definitely use workaround 2 because I have tested it on an iPhone and it works so I am pretty sure it works on an iPad even if you use Safari.

titleSome of my students emailed me saying they are getting a "3rd party session cookies blocked", why does this happen and what should I recommend my students do?

When you receive student emails on Kaltura not functioning because of “3rd party session cookies blocked” it is most likely that the students are using an iPhone. Please note that Kaltura does not seem to work on browsers in iPhones. It works just fine on Android phones but not at all with iOS.

Reason: iOS seems to block all cookies that Kaltura needs to load in Canvas. This issue happens on both Safari, and Chrome browsers.

When to expect this from students: when students try to record a video to upload as an introduction assignment. The app will not work at all. No functionality with the Kaltura link from the left nav menu nor with Embed Kaltura Media windows from within the text editor.

Workaround: 1) If students can’t upload/access Kaltura from their iPhone/iPad. Make these changes: on your iPad or iPhone, go to Settings > Safari, Privacy section, turn off “Prevent Cross-Site Tracking” (this step may be required to allow uploads via Safari, from Kaltura within Canvas).

  1. Ask students to transfer the video from iPhone or iPad to a computer and use their computer to upload the video. The video can be created using Kaltura tools or by using their phone's camera to record the video and uploading the video to their assignment using Kaltura via "Media Upload" button.

titleHow can I add a Kaltura video to Modules pages? There is no option for a video in Kaltura Media Gallery in the "Add Item" menu in Modules. I cannot find the links of videos in Kaltura Media Gallery either.

We cannot add a particular video in the Media Gallery to modules directly. The workaround is to embed the video on a page and add the page to the module.

Also, because we are only using the Canvas version of Kaltura, we cannot share the video as a link, we have to distribute the video to students either through Media Gallery or by embedding the video/video playlist in a page. You do not necessarily need to use the HTML code; you can embed the video wherever you can access the text editor in Canvas. Please see steps below:

  • Open one of the links on the course navigation menu through which you can access the text editor (called as Rich Content Editor). Links that will allows you to access the text editor are: Syllabus, Pages, Announcements, Assignments, Discussions, and Quizzes

  • Open Text Editor by clicking on the Edit button on one of the links mentioned in the previous bullet point.

  • Click on the "V" on the bottom row of the text editor menu, there will be a dropdown menu with 4 options one of the options is Embed Kaltura Media. Click on the Embed Kaltura Media button.

  • From the Embed Kaltura Media window, select an existing video you wish to upload and click on the "Embed" button.

  • If you like to record a video from this Embed Kaltura Media window, click on + Add New to create videos while you are developing content in your Canvas course.

titleI am having problems accessing Kaltura links in my Canvas and so are my students. What can I do to access Kaltura links?

The solutions below apply to students and faculty members.

  1. If you are using Safari, then switch to Google Chrome browser.

  2. Accept the 3rd party browser cookies in order to gain access to the video materials.

  3. Refresh/reload the browser a few times and if the error(s) continues to occur it is because of the ongoing maintenance.

  4. If you are trying to access Kaltura media on your iPhone/iPad, make these changes: on your iPad or iPhone, go to Settings > Safari, Privacy section, turn off “Prevent Cross-Site Tracking” (this step may be required to allow uploads via Safari, from Kaltura within Canvas).

Tip to instructors: If you could make an announcement about these steps in your Canvas course, that would be great for your students so they have a solution when they run into the problem.
