Turnitin has released an AI writing detection to help educators uphold academic integrity while ensuring that students are treated fairly. This feature has been added as a writing indicator to the Similarity Report. It shows an overall percentage of the document that AI writing tools, such as ChatGPT, may have generated.
The indicator further links to a report which highlights text segments the model predicts were written by AI. To use it, you need to follow your usual Similarity checking workflow. The following instructions are for accessing the AI Detection through a TII Canvas Assignment.
Please note:
Only assignments submitted after April 4th will have the AI detection available!
Only instructors and administrators are able to see the indicator.
The AI score is not embedded directly in the Canvas interface and you will need to go into the Similarity report to see the AI score and access the AI report.
Before accessing the AI Detection, you will need to enable TurnItIn as an assignment in Canvas. Please review the guide TII: Create Canvas Assignment.
Accessing the AI detection through Canvas
Log into Canvas and click into the course you have the assignment enabled with
Click the Assignments button on the left-hand navigation menu

As you can see from the next image, the following is a sample assignment that has been submitted through Turnitin that received a 100% for AI generated text.
This paper was written entirely by ChatGPT as an example, this was not an actual student submission.
