Things You Can Do to Begin Your Journey to Accessible Course Content
Fulfill these requirements with every page, document, image that you add to your course:
Use a font size of at least 12px.
Ensure that there is sufficient contrast between text and background.
Ensure that proper heading styles are used.
Ensure that a logical heading structure is used.
Ensure that images have an alternative description that can convey the full meaning of the image.
Select decorative images for non-essential images in Canvas and everywhere else images are used.
Ensure that tables are used for tabular data only.
Ensure that all tables have column headings.
Ensure that all lists use built-in list functionality.
Ensure that all links have text that describes the target.
Ensure that built-in PowerPoint slide templates are used.
Ensure that the word documents are accessible.
Don’t use scanned PDFs.
Ensure that all PDFs are tagged.
Minimize the Canvas menu items (remove all unnecessary items)
Consider this order: Home, Syllabus, Modules, Assignments, Grades
Use full file names on documents “Syllabus SOC 101 Spring 2021.pdf”
During course meetings:
Have students announce names
Provide the real file of the presentation, ensure it is accessible
Notify the students the session is being recorded
Try avoiding spontaneous Canvas based Discussions. Prepare for a pre-planned discussion where the student has the time to read others' responses and respond accordingly.
Provide the student with any PowerPoints or slides ahead of time because the screen reader does not pick up the content on the shared screen.
