Respondus LockDown Browser & Monitor

Respondus LockDown Browser™ is a custom browser that locks down the testing environment within Blackboard. When students use Respondus LockDown Browser they are unable to print, copy, go to another URL, or access other applications.

Respondus Monitor is a fully-automated proctoring solution. Students use a webcam to record themselves during an online exam. Afterward, flagged events and proctoring results are available to the instructor for further review.

For a brief overview of both Respondus LockDown Browser and Respondus Monitor, please review Respondus' Respondus Monitor in 20 slides (approx: 6:20 minutes).

Yes, absolutely! We now have Zoom live proctoring in LockDown browser which allows instructors to proctor their students when administering Canvas Quizzes. Please note that this feature is effective when you have small class of up to 25 students.

Please watch this video here to start using this much awaited feature from LockDown browser. Please feel free to reach out to us by clicking on the Contact Us button on the yellow banner at the top of this page and then on the Zoom Live Proctoring button or by clicking here (navigates to Google Calendar).

Please use the instruction written in Italics below to give clear instructions to students about the steps they need to follow to effectively be a part of LockDown browser Zoom proctoring.

Lockdown browser and Zoom web conferencing tool will be used for this quiz to enable live proctoring.

Instructions for Zoom Live Proctoring:

  • Open a regular browser (preferably, Google Chrome) first to open the course, click on the Zoom link and join the meeting.

  • I will take attendance and then I will provide a start code during the attendance meeting you will need to start the exam.

  • Keep your camera and mic turned on before launching the LockDown browser. You will NOT be able to access Zoom once the Lockdown browser is started.

  • Zoom will continue to run in the background, enabling me to see and hear you during the exam. However, you will be unable to access the system during the exam.

  • Once the attendance is complete and the exam code is given to you, launch the lockdown browser and navigate to the course and open the quiz. If you have not used LockDown browser before, follow the instructions under LockDown Browser Installation given below.

Please Note: An iPad doesn't allow you to run a video conferencing app and LockDown Browser at the same time. Consider these alternatives: 1) Use a different device altogether (Windows, Mac, Chromebook), 2) use a second device for the video conferencing itself.

Instructions for LockDown Browser Installation:

If you have not used the LockDown browser before this quiz, you would need to download and install LockDown Browser from this link.

To take an online test, start LockDown Browser and navigate to the exam. (You won't be able to access the exam with a standard web browser.) For additional details on using LockDown Browser, review this Student Quick Start Guide (PDF)

Finally, when taking an online exam, follow these guidelines:

  • Ensure you're in a location where you won't be interrupted

  • Turn off all mobile devices, phones, etc..

  • Clear your desk of all external materials — books, papers, other computers, or devices

  • Remain at your desk or workstation for the duration of the test

  • LockDown Browser will prevent you from accessing other websites or applications; you will be unable to exit the test until all questions are completed and submitted
