Rubrics: Rubrics for Grading

This module will explore the use of rubrics for grading and providing feedback to students. We’ll discuss the elements of a rubric, then create a rubric and outcome and apply them to an assignment. This module is intended for faculty looking for an efficient and consistent method of providing feedback to students.

Use a Rubric to:

  • Communicate assessment expectations to users

  • Align pre-defined learning Outcomes to your course assessments

  • Assess online submissions in the SpeedGrader™

3. Is the rubric used in program-level SLA? 

4. Do you analyze these data in any organized fashion? 


5. Does passing the rubric imply passing the course? 

6. Do you base this learning experience more on mastery than on grading? 

  • Course or Account Level Rubric? 

  • Let’s assume Account

    • Click on:

      • Outcomes

      • Manage Rubrics

      • Add Rubric

  • Title

  • Criterion Description

  • Longer Description

  • Add Rating

  • Edit Rating

  • Remove Rating

  • Edit Point Value

  • Add Criterion

  • Delete Criterion 

  • Find Criterion

  • Go to your Canvas Demo course

  • Click on

    • Outcomes

    • Manage Rubric

    • Add Rubric

  • Aim for: 

    • 3 rows

    • 3-4 columns

    • Performance Criteria

    • Performance Levels

    • Points

  • Don’t overthink it. 

  • Here’s an example or two...

  • track mastery in a course

  • import Account, State, and Common Core Standards into your course

  • create nested outcomes by dragging and dropping outcomes to create structure

    • at the account, sub-account or course-level

  • Click on: 

    • Outcomes

    • New Outcome

  • Name the Outcome

    • Friendly name, too. 

  • Describe the Outcome

  • Edit the Outcome

    • Insert Levels

    • Edit Description

    • Edit Points

    • Set Mastery

  • Go to your Canvas Demo course

  • Click on

    • Outcomes

    • Manage Rubrics

    • Edit the Rubric

  • Click Find Outcome Criterion

  • Navigate Menus, Select Outcome

  • Choose to “Use this criterion for scoring”?

  • Click Import

  • Assignment

  • Discussion

    • Does the Rubric currently exist in Canvas? 

    • Is the Rubric based on Outcomes?

    • Do the points match the Rubric points?  

Faculty: 

  • Publish?

  • Set Dates?

  • Switch to Student View

    • In Settings

Student View: 

  • Submit Assignment

  • Leave Student View

Faculty: 

  • Click on:

    • Assignments

    • SpeedGrader

    • View Rubric

  • Scroll and Click on Cells 

  • Add Comments

  • If score does not automatically update, then add score in upper field

  • Update Comments

Switch to Student View: 

  • Click on:

    • Settings

    • Student View 

    • Grades

    • Assignment Name

Options: 

  • Show Rubric

  • View Feedback

  • View Comments

  • Make Comments

  • Submit Comments

To adopt it, you must: 

  • Opt In

    • Settings - Feature Options

  • Use Outcomes

  • Reporting by Outcome not Grade

  • Filter and Target
